Superfoods
Superfoods are foods that have a high nutritional density, meaning that they offer a lot of nutritional benefits compared to the calories they contain. These foods pack multiple vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
Vitamins and minerals are essential nutrients that our bodies need in small amounts to carry out functions such as boosting our immune system, healing wounds, and strengthening bones.
Antioxidants are natural molecules found in certain foods that help to neutralize the effects of free radicals, byproducts of energy production, which are associated with the development of health conditions like arthritis, cancer, heart disease and stroke.
Benefits of Superfoods
1. Improve immunity
2. Reduce inflammation
3. Help to prevent coronary artery disease
4. Increase energy levels
Common Superfoods
1. Berries – acai berries, blueberries, raspberries
2. Leafy Greens – kale, spinach, Swiss chard (rich in vitamins A, C, E, and K and many B vitamins)
3. Salmon – high in omega-3 fatty acid can help reduce cholesterol and slow the development of coronary artery disease plaques
4. Soy – contains a phytochemical called isoflavone, which helps to reduce the amount of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) – otherwise known as “bad” cholesterol
5. Tea – a good source of antioxidants. Studies suggest that green and white teas may help to reduce stress. Green tea may help to suppress inflammation in the body and have an antarthritic effect
The key is to incorporate these superfoods as part of a healthy nutrition plan. Find produce that is in season and from local sources in order to preserve the highest nutrient content. Don’t disregard the humble apple or banana, as all fruits and vegetables can be considered part of the superfood group.
