Attitude

Studies show that having a positive attitude has significant health benefits.

1. Longer lifespan

2. Reduced stress and better coping mechanisms

3. Lower rates of depression

4. Better immunity to viruses like the common cold and flu

5. Reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease

6. Overall a better sense of well-being both physically and psychologically

We’re not exactly sure why positive and optimistic people experience these health benefits. It could be that they are better able to cope with the stressors of life or that they tend to live healthier lifestyles. Regardless of the reasons, the happier you are the healthier you will be.

Studies have shown that how you react to events more than the event itself affects your overall disposition. By taking steps to purposefully nurture a more positive attitude, you can dispel negative thoughts and feelings.

Here are some tips to help get you started.

1. Let go of negativity. You are going to have negative thoughts from time to time. That’s normal. Refrain from dwelling on them. The key is to acknowledge them and then move on.

2. Focus on the positive. Negative thoughts and attitudes are exhausting. If you let them persist, they can become stronger. Instead, refocus on the positive things in life whether that be your family, your pets, etc…Consider using a daily affirmation to start the day.

3. Use positive words in thought and meaning. Use of words and phrases that are affirming can change your attitude. Refrain from use of words such as “but,” “cannot,” and “never.” Instead try and forms sentences using “and”, “can”, “possible.”

4. Reframe your experiences into a more positive light. For example, look at challenges as opportunities for growth and success. In other words, put a positive spin on your experiences. Thomas Edison once said, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”

5. Exercise regularly. It’s amazing how regular exercise helps make you have a more positive outlook and having a more positive outlook helps you to keep exercising. One begets the other.
